A PC bottleneck happens when one component cannot keep up with the rest of the system. In gaming and creative work, that weak link is usually the CPU or the GPU—but RAM capacity, storage speed, resolution, and background apps can make the imbalance feel worse.

A CPU bottleneck often shows high processor usage while the GPU sits below full load—common at 1080p, in esports titles, or with heavy background apps. A GPU bottleneck is the opposite: the graphics card is maxed while the CPU still has headroom—more common at 1440p, 4K, ultrawide, and ultra settings.
Lower resolutions (720p / 1080p) push more work onto the CPU because frames are cheaper for the GPU to draw. Higher resolutions (1440p / 4K / 5K / 8K) and ultrawide panels shift load toward the GPU. Too little RAM (especially 4–8 GB) can starve games and multitasking. An HDD can add hitching and long loads even when CPU/GPU look balanced—SSD or NVMe is the better baseline for modern titles.
